A FEW WORDS FROM CRAIG
Me, being the procrastinator that I am, and with the convention season right around the corner, I thought to get off my butt and get this newsletter out before the busy holiday season. Speaking of which, I hope you all had a very special and happy Thanksgiving…there is a lot to be thankful for this year. 2025 again was a pretty good year for Iowa FNAWS. As of this writing, your organization has funded just over $700,000 towards various projects and causes which the membership and your Board believes all of you were instrumental in assisting the group’s goals of wildlife management, habitat improvement and enhancement of wild sheep, youth involvement in the outdoors, veterans alliances, and promoting women in the outdoors.
Again, I don’t believe there exists any other outdoor related organization of our size that gives back as much as Iowa FNAWS does, and on a 100% volunteer basis. To this, I thank you our loyal Iowa FNAWS members. Speaking of which, I am still attempting to put together some type of legacy fund for the future of Iowa FNAWS and its membership. I have been toying with numerous ideas and am looking at a way of establishing a fund which would assist in keeping Iowa FNAWS financially stable for years to come, and at the same time, continue to keep our membership involved and engaged. If any of you are interested in what I’m trying to accomplish and would like to know more about it, please drop me a line or call me and I would love to discuss and also get your input.
I can be reached at (402)650-1383 which is my cell or at nakamoto01@sbcglobal.net. Our 2026 fundraiser is scheduled for March 20–21 at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel.
Attached please find a registration form. I again ask that if you plan on attending, to send in your registration asap to assist in easing the burden of last-minute registrants, and to also take advantage of the early bird discount.
This year’s auction lineup will again prove to be very interesting, including a few special items including a Mongolian Argali hunt and several Bighorn hunts. As always, we hope to make it another exciting auction as well as entertaining weekend, including Friday hospitality night, Saturday morning Bingo and Texas Hold-Em tournaments, as well as the numerous other games throughout the afternoon. The youth laser shooting arcade will run throughout Saturday as well.
On a personal note, the highlight of my season was a trip to Mongolia where I took a fantastic Hangai Argali. I was also accompanied with my son Kyle and good friend Pat O’Neill, who both got very nice trophies as well. If you have never been to Mongolia, I sincerely believe you should put this on your bucket list. Mongolia has tremendous hunting and I plan to go back.
Being my second trip to Mongolia it was through this hunt that I was able to grow my relationships with several of the hunting organizations in Mongolia, which is how I was able to manage to get the Argali hunt donation and also an Ibex hunt for a raffle. The hunt will be for a Gobi Argali. The tag was provided by the Mongolian Outfitters Association, and the Mongolian Outfitters Consortium has donated the guiding and hunt. Iowa FNAWS will be donating back 100% of the proceeds of this auction to Mongolia for their wildlife program. Therefore, it may be justified that this could be tax deductible event, however I will leave that part up to the winning bidder and his accountant. This would be a great way to get a fantastic hunt. I have included in this newsletter a copy of the writeup of this hunt.
Also, we are currently conducting a raffle for a Mongolian Gobi Ibex hunt. The raffle tickets costs $100 each. The hunt is valued at $16,500 and the winner can opt to utilize this value towards any other Mongolian Ibex, Argali, or any other Mongolian big game species. We will be drawing the winner at our fundraiser and the winner need not be present. Should the winner not want to hunt in Mongolia (I don’t know who wouldn’t), he/she can take a cash option of $5,000. Heck, I would be willing to give the winner the $5,000 if he or she wants!
This year, I had the opportunity to take a couple of trips down to the JM Lutich Ranch where Iowa FNAWS helped fund the ranch’s wildlife management program. Part of the funding included a roof for the water reservoir and waterlines from the reservoir to the various wildlife guzzlers. I can honestly say that the watering and wildlife management program is definitely working as evidenced by the attached pictures.
On my latest trip, I encountered a group of desert bighorns which included four or five mature rams and several ewes. All of the sheep appeared to be very healthy. On another trip earlier I did see a group of ewes and lambs and they too appeared very healthy. There is also a good population of mule deer, javalina and an ever-growing population of elk.
Scott and LeLois plan to attend our fundraiser and have donated several hunts including a mule deer hunt, a javalina hunt and an elk hunt. So, I can definitely say that our funding is paying off and providing additional hunting opportunities for our membership. We need to nurture and generate relationships such we have with Scott and LeLois, who are examples of excellent stewards of wildlife, and ultimately generated hunting opportunities, especially for our members.
Again for this year, Reserved Tables will be an option, which can be purchased during the early bird registration timeframe. A reserved table consists of seating for 10. The normal early registration cost is $90 per person. With the Reserved Table, the price will be $1250, however with that price will include $250 worth of raffle tickets, AND each Reserved Table will have a ticket for a chance to win a firearm. Only Reserved Table holders will be in this drawing for the firearm. So essentially, the odds of winning the firearm will probably be one of the best ever! So, if you are coming with a group of friends, I highly encourage you to pre-register for a reserved table. Attached is the Early Bird Pre-registration form.
Whether you are registering individually, with a small group or for a reserved table, I would appreciate it if you would consider filling it and sending it back as soon as you decide on coming, for I feel this year we may hit the capacity of the ballroom and may have to turn away late registrants.
Individual early bird registrations are $90/person and youth (under 16 years of age), $35 as compared to $105 and $50 respectively. The cutoff for early bird registration is February 15, 2026. After that date, the Reserved Table registration, if available, will be $1400.00. And anyone without a Reserved Table will be subject to open seating as they are available.
In closing, hope you had a successful and exciting season and looking forward to seeing you in March!

Last Words and some extras by Kyle
I had the incredible opportunity to hunt Mongolia with Craig this past year. Let me be the first to tell you, if you get the opportunity to go there, GO!! It was most definitely a culture shock but it was awesome to spend time hunting the mountains of Mongolia and sleeping in the traditional Mongolian Yurts in the evening! The guides were top notch and were able to get me on two incredible Ibex!
Greg Schultz and I attended the APHA annual fundraiser and yearly meeting in Anchorage in mid-December. Iowa FNAWS put forth $25,000 towards APHA to continuing efforts for hunters in Alaska. We were able to attend some of the meetings and hear about the uphill battles APHA has to endure to continue hunting for all hunters in Alaska. It was quite interesting, and enlightening to know that Iowa FNAWS and its memberships funds are fighting the good fight!

As we all head into the 2025–2026 hunting season, I wish all of you good luck. See all of you March 21, 2026 for our 47th banquet!
